Window company says demand for security windows and security screens up.

A local window company says demand for security windows has gone up by about 50% this year. Diamond Head Windows & Doors says it started seeing an increase in sales a couple years ago.

HONOLULU (KITV4) -- A local window company says demand for security windows has gone up by about 50% this year. Diamond Head Windows & Doors says it started seeing an increase in sales a couple years ago.

About eight months ago, the request for quotes really picked up. Almost all of the customers cited high theft in their neighborhood. This company doesn't install bars over the windows, but it can put in metal security screens that cover the entire window box. And it has some window panes with security measures built in.

Here's some measures you can take right now to safeguard your house.

"Jalousies are very easy to break in. Siliconing the glass together is one way. Adding a security bar with just wood, even. If there's glass, anyone can break into it. You might want to get an extra camera or couple alarms on easy windows to break into," manager Makamae DeSoto said.

The wait time now for installation is about half a year or longer. So even if you do order security windows, those might be good tips to act on.
